A tragic road accident took place at Lakhipur near Kalain on National Highway No. 6 at 2 pm on Wednesday.  Five students lost their life.  The students were in the first year B. Sc at Badarpur NC College.

The fatal accident took place when the students were returning in a car from college and met head-on with a speeding overloaded truck. The car had flown to a nearby water body due to the impact.

3 students died on the spot. One student succumbed at Kalain Government Hospital while another critically injured student died on the way to Silchar Medical College and Hospital. The deceased were identified as Arif Ansari Lashkar, Manzoor Ahmed, Zafar Hossain, Salman Alam and Govinda Baishnav.

Angry Protesters blocking the Highway

The angry locals and students blocked the highway and did not allow the three dead bodies to be taken till higher authorities reach the spot. NC College Principal and other students rushed to the spot.

The locals decried the inaction of OC Katigorah Nayanmoni Sinha, Amal Pal in-charge of Kalain as police were inactive. The protesters were adamant that SP & DC Cachar should reach the spot.

MLA Katigora Amar Chand Jain being hackled by the protestors

Two hours after the incident, the local MLA Amarchand Jain reached but angry protestors started slamming him and shouted go back due to his lackadaisical approach.

Later on the basis of a written assurance from Cachar DC stating that a meeting of all relevant department and citizen representative will be held on 4th December, the protester cleared the National Highway and the dead bodies were sent for postmortem.

On Thursday it came to the notice that the MLA had filed an FIR against a student who actually had jumped to the water body to rescue the injured. He was later seen asking strong emotive questions to the MLA demanding action against rash driving in the populated area of Kalain.

Police had taken custody of the student at the wee hour of Thursday. This had irked the student community against the Local MLA Jain and the OC Katigorah Nayanmoni Sinha.

This action of MLA Amar Chand Jain who is supposed to be empathetic to the tragic incident had filed an FIR and Cachar Police without any basis taking the student in its custody is being strongly condemned by the agitating students and civil society.

The student though is released by the Police, the students are demanding that the MLA Jain and OC Katigora has to apologise for their action.
