Gorai Phakhri is officially nominated for the German Star of India Award 2024 at the 21st Indian Film Festival Stuttgart in Germany

Rajni Basumatary directorial Bodo feature film ‘Gorai Phakhri’ subtitled in English as Wild Swans that had been in the festivals in India and overseas is currently running in theatres in Assam. Released on 14th June on selected theatres in Guwahati,Bongaigaon, Tangla, Biswanath and Kokrajhar the film had a quick pick at the box office.
Set in the foothills of Bodoland in northeast India, the story explores the lives of women in a patriarchal society recovering from decades of armed conflict in the region. Gorai Phakhri is Rajni Basumatary’s fourth film as a script writer and third film as a director. She states that the sequences of the film are not mere stories but part of her own upbringing.
The film will help take forward dialogue on the subject. In terms of visual aesthetics, the enchanting beauty of the rivers, rice fields and rolling foothills stand as witness to the women’s struggle of emerging gloriously from oppressive circumstances, making it a wholesome experience of cinematic storytelling. She further adds that the uniqueness of this film is that it has an all female cast and most crew members are women.
Gorai Phakhri had been in a dozen festivals in India and abroad. It won the Best Film award at the Kolkata International Film Festival 2023 and Nepal International Film festival 2024, the Best Director award at the Sailadhar Baruah Film Awards 2023 and award for the Best Sound at the North East India Film festival 2024. It had its world premier at the 42nd edition of the Vancouver International Film festival.
Produced by Jani Viswanath and co-produced by Rajni Basumatary under the banner of Manna Films it features Helina Daimary, Sangeena Brahma, Mithinga Narzary and Anjali Daimari in key roles. Avinash Baghel has done the music. Chida Bora is the cinematographer whereas Tinni Mitra edited the film.
Initially released with 6 shows, the film is running successfully in its 2nd week. Owing to the much love and response from the audience, the halls in Bongaigaon and Kokrajhar had added more shows from the third day of the first week itself. It is worth mentioning that the producer had a tough time in getting more than one show in any hall, but the sales at the box office convinced the halls to add more shows later.
In the second week it has ten shows running in Guwahati, Bongaigaon, Tangla, Rangia and Kokrajhar where Gold Cinema is only showing Gorai Phakhri in its schedule. Meanwhile, news poured in that Gorai Phakhri is officially nominated for the German Star of India Award 2024 at the 21st Indian Film Festival Stuttgart in Germany.
