Protesters arrested, police hurt
Imphal : In Manipur Churachandpur district, administration had to resort to impose section 144 of CrPc and banned large gatherings on Friday as protests turned violent and people boycotted the proposed visit of State Chief Minister N Biren Singh the same day.
Earliar Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum (ITLF) called a bandh and a total shutdown was imposed where they alleged that people were forcefully evicted and the government had not given any positive response to their memorandum submitted in the matter of survey being carried out in reserved forest area.
The situation went out of hand when in Churachandpur district headquarters after a group of people set on fire a newly constructed open gym on Thursday night. The same gym was suppose to be inaugurated by the state Chief Minister on the invitation of local MLA.
The security forces were unable to manage the situation when a large number of youths on Friday again destroyed the stage where the Chief Minister of Manipur was was scheduled to attend the event at New Lamka after inaugurating the gym.
The ITLF closed the whole town and vehicular movement were stopped with tyres burning. A large number of youths came out when the incident went out of hand and the venue was destroyed resulting police resorting to firing tear gas and protesters starting pelting of stones
In the incident one police person was injured and two people were also arrested as par reports coming out of the district.
