A married couple from Kakopathar in Assam‘s Tinsukia district, reportedly abandoned their ancestral home and 4-year-old daughter to join the proscribed rebel group, ULFA (I), led by Paresh Baruah.

According to local media reports, Achyut Neog and his wife Mamata Neog left their four-year-old daughter in the care of their grandparents in Dirak Kapatoli village. The child attends Kakopathar Jatiya Vidyalaya.

Sources believe the couple departed for ULFA (I) bases located in Myanmar. This news comes as a shock, particularly for Achyut’s father, Sanmon Neog, a former ULFA member himself. Sanmon Neog joined the group at 18 but later in 1993, he left ULFA to reintegrate into society and lead a normal life.

A senior police officer reportedly informed Sanmon Neog about his son and daughter-in-law’s decision.

“After they left, a police officer called me, saying my son and daughter-in-law joined ULFA (I),” Sanmon Neog told local media.

“I request Paresh Baruah sir, if possible, to please send them back. They have a young daughter who needs her parents,” he said.
