According to villagers, their parents had gone to the Barak river to pick snails, their mainstay. Villagers found the mother and their oldest daughter drowned in the Barack River.   The eldest among the orphans is 12 years old on whose shoulder the responsibility of her siblings now rests. Of the remaining siblings are two twins of 2 years old.

People of Tamenglong district are now drawing parallels with the recent Maphou incident where three siblings drowned to death when the boat they were on a joyride capsized. Following the incident, the state government swung into action and undertook rescue operation and initiated several countermeasures to prevent such incident from occurring and quickly offered relief to the bereaved family.

While the Barak tragic has not received any attention from the media as well as the government.  The bereaved family is from Kaimai village, under Tousem sub division of Tamenglong District who totally depended on river snail hunting and selling.

Reportedly, Kuki Khanglai Lawmpi (KKL) Jiribam Branch under the aegis of KKL-GHQs has initiated crowdfunding in various social media groups for the poor children. Yet the government of the day is yet to react to the tragedy of the 6 unfortunate orphans of Tamenglong.

Meanwhile,  the Director of social welfare department, Ngangom Uttam, who was not aware of the tragedy when krctimes inquired, said a team of district child protection unit along with members of the Child Welfare Committee would be dispatched to access the situation and take appropriate action for the orphans.
