The region of West Karbi Anglong district is facing severe flooding after water was released through five gates of the Karbilangpi Hydropower Project and seven gates of the Khandang Hydropower Project due to a recent cyclone and incessant rains. This has caused the Kopili and Borpani rivers to overflow, leading to widespread inundation.
The Ramani field along the Borpani river was particularly affected, with water submerging the area. Several villages, including Juripar and Shimluguri, have been heavily flooded. Water has entered many homes, causing extensive damage to personal property and household items.
The flooding has also disrupted traffic, rendering roads impassable and halting transportation in the affected areas. In response to the rising water levels, many residents have been forced to evacuate their homes. These individuals have sought refuge in safer locations, leaving behind their belongings in the face of the advancing floodwaters.
Local authorities are actively managing rescue and relief operations, working to assist those displaced by the floods. Emergency services are on the ground, providing necessary aid and ensuring the safety of the residents.
The ongoing heavy rains and potential further water releases from the hydropower projects pose continuing risks.
