Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, while addressing an event in Bhubaneswar, criticised the Congress party’s stance on secularism.
He stated that although Congress frequently speaks about secularism, the term was not mentioned in the original draft of the Constitution.
He asserted that India has been a secular country for centuries.
Sarma further added that Indians, who have the courage to utter ‘sarve bhavantu sukhinah’, a Sanskrit phrase meaning ‘may all be happy’, do not need to learn about secularism from Congress.
Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma addressing an event in Bhubaneswar said, “Congress always speaks about secularism…When the Constitution was drafted, there was no mention of the word secularism…Our country has been secular for centuries…When we have the courage to say ‘sarve bhavantu sukhinah’, then we don’t have to learn about secularism from Congress”…
Earlier on May 13, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that Punjab must give Prime Minister Narendra Modi a chance, asserting that North and West India have already given 100 per cent of seats to the BJP leader.
He also said that people from East India are also in the mood to give PM Modi a chance.
Addressing a public meeting in Patiala, Punjab, the Assam chief minister said that Modi’s candidature seems good in Punjab. He said, “North India and West India have already given their 100 per cent seats to PM Modi. This time East India is also in the mood to give all its seats to him. I think things are good for us in Punjab as well.”
The Lok Sabha elections in Punjab, which has 13 Lok Sabha constituencies, will be held in a single phase on June 1, 2024.
