Transgenders can enjoy the health benefits initiated by the government
Health & IPR Minister Dr. Sapam Ranjan Singh has said that we should feel proud for being what we are. Minister was speaking as Chief Guest on the occasion of the observance of World AIDS Day organized by jointly Transgender Health and Wellness Centre, SASO and PATH at Transgender Health and Wellness Centre, Porompat Imphal East on Thursday.
Dr. Ranjan Singh said that transgenders should not be disappointed for reasons of social stigma and others. Instead, they should feel proud for being themselves. Comments should be taken positively. They need to diversify their fields through their talents. They should not be the victims of negative comments from others. There has been a positive change in the status of transgenders during the past few years. It’s a transition period, he added.
He also maintained that there the government have been taking up welfare measures for the transgenders in the state. Transgenders can enjoy the health benefits initiated by the government. Grievances will be addressed on a priority basis. Mental harassment of transgender should be stopped. Measures for their mental wellbeing will be taken up, the minister assured.
Minister also stated that concerned departments like the Social Welfare department will also be consulted for their welfare, and a database system for the medical professionals and stakeholders needs to be maintained. A united effort is required to fight against drugs and AIDS. The efforts and roles of the NGOs and voluntary organizations in this regard are worth appreciation, the Minister added.
Dr. Lokeshshwar Singh, Medical Superintendent, JNIMS, Kh. Diana Devi, Deputy Commissioner Imphal East, Dr. Abhiram Mongjam, Joint Director (TI), MACS also graced the occasion as president and Guests of Honour respectively.
