The patient post-surgery had no pain in her TMJ and was able to open and close her mouth properly
A 24 year old female patient reported to the department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) Supercare Hospital Shillong with Chief complain of severe pain in Bilateral TMJ and progressive development of open Bite. Her MRI of the condyle showed condylar hypoplasia with degeneration of the articular disc and reduced joint space.
The team of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (who are a part of the OncomaxNE association) headed by Dr.Bobby L Majaw from Shillong and Dr. Ashutosh Vatsyayan from Guwahati carried out what is possibly the first ever CAD/CAM (Computer-aided – design/Computer-aided Manufacturing ) Alloplastic Bilateral Temporomandibular Joint replacement in a private set up in North East at Supercare Hospital, Shillong.
The custom fabricated implant was manufactured by TMJ Consultancy Services from Bhopal under the guidance of Dr.Darpan Bhargava. The operation lasted for 8 hours. Dr. PS Chakraborty, co-director of OncomaxNe and who is currently pursuing his MSc in Clinical Oncology at Birmingham, UK also expressed his happiness at the team’s success.
The patient post-surgery had no pain in her TMJ and was able to open and close her mouth properly.
It must be mentioned that the entire surgery was supported by the MHIS Govt Health Scheme.
The team of doctors also included Dr. Debashish Borkotoky (OMFS) and anesthetists Dr.J Bordoloi and Dr.Sangeeta.
