Floods in Assam is an annual feature that people of the state have been living with ever since time immemorial.
Though we take great pride in claiming that India has made remarkable development in all spheres, but when it comes to Assam the nation simply seems to take the damages as a fact of life.
This year too, the flood situation of Assam remains grim as new areas have been inundated. Most of the rivers flowing through Assam including the Brahmaputra are showing a rising trend.
As several important roads have been submerged, the vehicular movement has come to a halt, life mostly in the rural areas have become difficult.
Assam is experiencing such devastating floods after a gap of 2-3 years. Over 26 lakhs of people from 28 districts have been affected.
The worst affected areas are Morigaon, Dhubri, and Barpeta. The State government has set up over 300 relief camps. More than 16,000 inmates are taking shelter in the camps. The security in Kaziranga National park has been put on alert.
