Imphal : The disturbing visuals of women being paraded naked and allegedly gang-raped in the Thoubal district of Manipur went viral and as the whole country voiced discontent and embarrassment including people in Imphal valley, Manipur the police could arrest four people including one of the two persons seen groping the naked women. As mass protests erupted across the state cutting across communities denouncing the inhuman act against the innocent victims of warfare, a mob burnt down the house of the prime accused Huirem Herodas.
Another house of a person suspected to be involved in the sexual assault has also been torched by irate people.
The four arrested in the sexual assault case were produced before the Judicial magistrate’s first class in the Thoubal court through video conferencing. The four alleged accused have been remanded to eleven days of police custody for further investigation.
Cutting across party lines including Manipur’s Governor and Chief Minister, cabinet ministers, and MLAs strongly condemn the brutal sexual atrocities against two women, the image of which has recently surfaced in social media. Meira Paibis, women organizations as well as the general public are condemning the gruesome incident.
This Incident has lowered our heads with shame in front of the world, stated Meitei Leepun.
It is to be noted that internet services are banned in the state of Manipur from May 3 till date. It is feared that many disturbing videos may emerge in the coming days which may further escalate the law and order deterioration in the state.
