New Delhi: The government is considering monitoring internet traffic through a centralized system that is operational across the country, Parliament was informed Thursday. “The government has set up a Centralised Monitoring System (CMS) for lawful interception and monitoring of mobile phones, landlines and internet traffic through mobile networks.
“At present, monitoring of internet traffic through internet service providers is being done through Internet Monitoring System which is under consideration for integration with CMS,” Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said in a written reply to Rajya Sabha.
The hub of CMS is located in Delhi and 21 regional monitoring centres are operational across all the 22 telecom circles in the country.
The CMS facilitates automated processing of lawful interception orders from law enforcement agencies to telecom operators. It allows electronic provisioning of the targets without manual intervention of telecom operators.
Legal Tracking Of Mobile Phones Begin Next Month
The government will launch a technology solution next month to enable detection of lost or stolen mobile phones that are operating in the country, reports said.
The CEIR system will block all services on stolen or lost mobile phones on any network even if the SIM card is removed or IMEI number of the handset is changed.
According to reports, The Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DoT) is ready with the technology and the service is expected to be launched in August. “C-DoT is ready with the technology.
Under this, IMEI numbers of all operational mobile phones will be connected via a single database, and once a report of any mobile lost comes in, the Govt. officials would be able to instantly locate it.
This technology is even if the lost mobile is activated on another mobile network, the database would be able to track it easily.
