Reacting to the assault case of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha member Swati Maliwal, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has urged for a thorough investigation into the matter, asserting that Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal should also be scrutinized in connection to the incident.

Maliwal lodged an official complaint with the Delhi Police on Friday, detailing the alleged harassment and torture she faced at the residence of Arvind Kejriwal. The FIR, registered at the Civil Lines police station, includes disturbing accounts of the assault she claims to have experienced on May 13.

While the FIR specifically names Kejriwal’s former aide Bibhav Kumar, it does not directly implicate the Chief Minister, as confirmed by a police official involved in the case.According to Maliwal’s allegations outlined in the FIR, the incident occurred at the Chief Minister’s residence where Kumar purportedly assaulted her multiple times, including slapping her and hitting her on the chest and stomach.

The FIR has been filed under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including assault and criminal force on a woman with the intent to outrage her modesty, criminal intimidation, and assault. In response to the escalating situation, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has demanded Kejriwal to issue a statement on the matter and extend an apology. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman condemned Kejriwal’s silence, labeling it as “unbelievable and unacceptable” during a press conference at the BJP headquarters.

The BJP urged Kejriwal to address the issue promptly and take appropriate action.Meanwhile, Kejriwal’s former aide, Bibhav Kumar, failed to appear before the National Commission for Women (NCW) despite being summoned. The NCW had dispatched a team to serve Kumar a notice, but he was reportedly not at his residence.

In efforts to gather evidence, the Delhi Police is set to examine the CCTV footage from Kejriwal’s residence where the alleged assault took place. With eight CCTV cameras installed outside the premises, authorities are keen on piecing together the sequence of events leading up to the incident. Additionally, multiple police teams are working on locating Bibhav Kumar, who is believed to be in Punjab.
