GUWAHATI : Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated the need for a sustainable, long-term approach to address the state’s persistent flood problems during a statement on July 26. Sarma asserted that the flooding, primarily caused by water from outside the state, requires more than just one-time financial assistance.

In his remarks, Sarma highlighted that Assam has already received a significant amount of financial aid for flood relief, totaling Rs 4,600 crore over the past few years. He assured that additional support is anticipated in the near future.

“The flood situation in Assam is complex and demands a comprehensive solution,” Sarma stated. “We have been provided substantial funds, but a permanent strategy is crucial for mitigating the recurring impact of floods.”

Meanwhile, recent reports indicate a positive shift in the flood scenario. As of Thursday, water levels in major rivers have receded, and the number of people affected by the deluge has decreased to 66,267 across nine districts.

There have been no reported human casualties. The improving situation brings some relief as the state continues to navigate the challenges posed by seasonal floods.
