Various tribal student bodies and civil society organizations are poised to initiate a series of protests, including strikes and blockades, across the Tripura starting from February 12.
Voicing their discontent with the state government, leaders of student bodies expressed disappointment over the government’s lack of response regarding the Kokborok language exams. Despite a two-day wait in anticipation of government dialogue, officials maintained a notable silence on the matter.
Sajra Debbarma, secretary of the TSIF, outlined plans for the blockades, specifying that they would occur on railways and highways. Debbarma affirmed their steadfastness, stating that picketers would convene in designated areas across all eight districts. Essential services like fire brigade, ambulances, and vehicles for weddings would be permitted, while all other movement would be restricted.
Moreover, Debbarma clarified that students would not be exempted from the blockades to attend exams. Responding to inquiries about government dialogue, Debbarma indicated no communication from the state government, underscoring that protests would persist until their demands were met.
The Twipra Students’ Federation, affiliated with NESO, pledged solidarity with the blockades, announcing a comprehensive shutdown. TSF President Samrat Debbarma emphasized their support for TSIF’s cause, while TSF Vice President John Debbarma declared a statewide strike.
Simultaneously, the Joint Movement For Kokborok, comprising 37 organizations advocating for the Roman script, confirmed their participation in the movement.
