Haflong : With rest of the Nation, the National flag was hoisted at Bonkai one of the remotest places of Dima Hasao by GB Puranjay Langthasa in patriotic fervours on Tuesday.
Langthasa has been celebrating Independence Day of his own since 1999. From early morning he was seen busy for the preparations and calling all the villagers to attend the celebration.
The village was established in 1927 and recognized in 1932. Bongkai village is only 500 meters from Nagaland located at the tri-juncture of Assam, Nagaland and Manipur about 120 km from Haflong. Villagers were attacked many times in the past by the people from the neighbouring state of Nagaland.
Even the Security men were attacked about 30 years back during the celebration of Independence Day.Now with the establishment of peace, they are delighted but development is at snail’s speed. Their demand is significantly less it needs proper irrigation for wet cultivation.
They claim themselves as the true Indians and celebrate Independence Day every year with great zeal. In one sense they are the sentinel of Dima Hasao since they are guarding the state border despite all odds.
GB Langthasa explaining the meaning of patriotism dwelt at length on the contribution of Mahatma Gandhi and Subhash Chandra Bose and others who have sacrificed a lot for independence. He appealed to all the citizens of India to be proud as Indians.
