Silchar : “International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking” was observed in the Cachar district of Assam on Monday, with the motto of “Nesha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan”. To mark the occasion, a rally was organised by the Cachar district administration to raise awareness against drug abuse and illegal trafficking on the occasion.

The rally was flagged off by Deputy Commissioner Rohan Kumar Jha and additional deputy commissioner Yubraj Borthakur.The rally started from DC’s office premises and ended at the police parade ground in Silchar via Club Road, Central Road, Bhawal Point, Gandhi Bagh.  

After the rally police parade came to an end, a voluntary organization named “Saksham” performed a street play to raise awareness against drug abuse and illegal trafficking. A pledge was also taken on the occasion to create awareness among the people.

Along with ADC Tridib Kumar Konwar, Executive Magistrate and Cultural Development Officer Bidyashri Langthasa, Additional Deputy Commissioner Antara Sen took the pledge to create awareness among people against drugs.

Later, while talking to the newsmen, ADC Antara Sen said that this rally has been organized by the district administration of Cachar to create awareness among people. The global drug problem is a complex problem that affects millions worldwide affects people.

Many people who use drugs face stigma and discrimination. ADC Sen further stated that the district administration has laid emphasis on creating awareness among people about the significance of the day in various educational institutions etc. and various voluntary organizations have been trained in this regard.

“People who use drugs face stigma and discrimination, which can further damage their physical and mental health and prevent them from getting the help they need”  ADC Sen added. 

The rally was also participated by students and other members from the district administration of Cachar along with District Child Welfare Association, District Health Service, Silchar Residential Boys School, Cachar College, Shivsundari Nari Shiksharam, and Indian Red Cross Society.

It is noteworthy to mention that the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, or World Drug Day, is marked on 26 June every year to strengthen action and cooperation in achieving a world free of drug abuse.

The aim of this year’s campaign is to raise awareness about the importance of treating people who use drugs with respect and empathy; providing evidence-based, voluntary services for all; offering alternatives to punishment; prioritizing prevention; and leading with compassion.

The campaign also aims to combat stigma and discrimination against people who use drugs by promoting language and attitudes that are respectful and non-judgmental
