On the occasion of mother’s day Manipur’s Iron Lady, joined the league by giving birth her twins Irom Sharmila gave birth to her twin daughters at 9:12am at  Malleswaram’s  branch on Sunday through C-section on Sunday.

The twins – Nix Shakhi weight 2.16kg while Autumn Tara weight 2.14kg were born to Irom Sharmila who was at her 35 weeks of pregnancy.
Sharmila said her first daughter, Nix Sakhi, has been named after her mother, Irom Sakhi, who died some months ago.She expressed her close bond with her mom. 

According to sources she shared her find memories of her mother and how much she misses her deeply, ” wish she could have known. I wish I could have picked up the phone to tell her,’’ she said

When asked about the name she expressed her husband chose her first daughter “Nix” which means “snow” in Latin. They wanted their daughter to be cool and calm like the snow,” she expressed. Their second daughter has been named after “a Buddhist goddess, the female reincarnation of the Buddha”.

The 46 years old  civil rights activist’ s British husband Desmond Coutinho was seen by her bedside. Giving a big hug Countinho told reporters that he was the happiest man in the world.

Dr Sriparda Vinekar, obstetrician and gynecologist, in charge of the cesarean, said the procedure went by the book.Irom Sharmila is still recovering and the pictures of her twins babies would be out very soon.
Talking to media personnel he said that, “The couple have been in Bengaluru since the first month of Sharmila’s pregnancy. So, we were monitoring her progress.

Irom Chanu Sharmila is known for her 16-year-long hunger strike in protest of the alleged atrocities of the army in Manipur, demanding to repeal the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA), 1958.

Nominated in 2005 for the Peace Nobel, she is often called ‘The Iron Lady of Manipur’ and ‘Mengoubi’, meaning ‘The Fair One’.
This lady got repeatedly arrested for “attempted suicide”, which she continued with a firm resolve.She then collapsed six days into her strike on November 11, 2000, and thereafter was fortified with a Ryle’s tube, feeding nutrients directly into her body. 

Sharmila, (47), began her hunger strike back in November 2000, after the fatal shooting of 10 civilians, allegedly by the troops in Malom, Manipur. She had pledged to end her strike only after AFSPA, which gave the army extra-judicial powers, was scrapped.

Her 2016’s  9th August action of linking honey with her finger was a turning point signalling the very end of her protest She then pledge to enter politics to continue her fight against the act.
