Neither Congress nor the Autonomous State Demand Committee could reach any respectable figure in the last election
Diphu : Bharatiya Janata Party is consolidating its vote bank in West Karbi Anglong in spite of having maximum electorates under its domain at present. The grounds can be traced from the outcome of the voting pattern of the last election i.e. election to the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council of May 2022.
Although Bharatiya Janata Party won in all the twenty six constituencies, the share of vote between the ruling party and the newly emerged All Party Hill Leaders Conference was scary for the leadership of BJP. Neither Congress nor the Autonomous State Demand Committee could reach any respectable figure in the last election.
Once dominating leftist party CPI (ML) also cut a sorry figure. With a massive leap the APHLC became the chief opposition in the autonomous hill region of Assam.
From the eagerness of the ruling party ahead of the Lok Sabha election of 2024, it is clear that the party doesn’t want to leave any stone unturned. BJP is penetrating in every opposition bastion to coalesce the scattered opposition; in such a move a rally was organized by the BJP at Deramukam, in the vicinity of Jengkha locality of West Karbi Anglong on Sunday.
In the rally around 690 political activists having allegiance to the Autonomous State Demand Committee, Congress, All Party Hill Leaders Conference and supporters of the independent candidate of Socheng and Kopili MAC constituencies joined Bharatiya Janata Party. The rally was organized for the mass joining in the saffron party.
The formal amalgamation was led by ASDC leader Biren Teron, Ramsing Terang and Longwel Engti. Chief Executive Member of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council Tuliram Ronghang who addressed the rally said that, to fulfill the demand of Autonomous State, infrastructural development, to receive government jobs and services we will have to support the ruling government.
He mentioned that in the long drawn ASDCs tenure it was only boycott, shut down, abhorrence and violence in the form of ethnic clashes. Peace fades away from the hills, leaving behind the culture of bandh. Ronghang claimed that at present maximum ASDC leaders have joined BJP to secure their future.
Member of Lok Sabha from Diphu constituency Horensing Bey also addressed the rally, Bey mentioned that during BJP rule peace has revisited the autonomous hill region of Assam. Bey attacking the APHLC said that this party is misleading the peaceful Karbi Society, in the name of making the sixth schedule stronger. “APHLC is the most communal party and is spreading revulsion among Honghari and Christians in our Districts” Bey said.
