To prevent the escape police on duty fired two rounds targeting his legs
Police had to injure a drugs paddler to stop him from running away from custody on Wednesday at Bokajan, who was caught with a large quantity of heroin. Accused Saddam Hussain consumed bullet injury in his leg and was rushed to hospital by police where his condition has been stated to be stable,
According to information, Bokajan police laid a temporary checkpoint from Tuesday at Matipul locality of the town based on specific secret inputs about possible smuggling of drugs through that route instead of the normal road which passes through a regular police check gate.
At about 9.30 PM a scooter bearing registration No AS 09 H 4234 was intercepted by police near the checkpoint and recovered 150 soapboxes containing 1 kg 777 grams heroin, worth around twelve crore rupees.
Police immediately detained two persons who were later arrested and identified as Bimol Tossa (23) son of Jiban Tossa of village Gharialdubi located within Bokajan police station of Karbi Anglong district and Saddam Hussain (26) son of late Saiful Islam of village Moirabari Patik Bari under Mairabari police station of Marigaon district.
Police have informed that during preliminary interrogation they have confessed that they were transporting the drugs to deliver at Naoghat, of Sarupathar subdivision, and to avert Khatkhati police check post they proffered trek by the side of the train line.
The police operation was carried out under the leadership of senior police officer John Das of Bokajan and was assisted by Inspector Moni Chamuah, officer in charge of Bokajan, and was keenly assisted by Village Defense Party of Matipul locality.
It is to be mentioned here that while returning back to Bokajan police station after observing all official procedures from the location of operation, accused Saddam Hussain complained about feeling uneasy and requested to allow him to get down from the police vehicle. But after getting down he pushed away police personnel on guard and attempted to break out. To prevent the escape police on duty fired two rounds targeting his legs and the accused received bullet injury in the targeted place.
