A sudden flash flood originating from River Amtreng washed away a large portion of the village market and dwelling houses in the wee hours of Sunday
Abnormal increases in temperature over the last eight days throughout the state have alarmed the conscious section of people, living across Barak, Brahmaputra valley, and in the hills.
Not only temperature variation across the state, hills of Assam, particularly West Karbi Anglong district is witnessing the bizarre type of flood fury after suffering from severe heat waves in recent days. Weird natural occurrence is being compared as the worst mishap in the checked history of seventy years of that area now by the locals.
According to information received, after a hammering downpour in the high altitude areas surrounding Amtreng hills of West Karbi Anglong on Saturday night, a sudden flash flood originating from River Amtreng washed away a large portion of the village market and dwelling houses in the wee hours of Sunday.
Floodwater in its downhill crossing swept away a large portion of the road connecting Baithalangso area with Guwahati through Amsoi road. Artery road connecting Karbi Langpi Hydro Electric Project has been badly affected, a Shiva Temple located inside wooded area near Amsoi locality has considerably been destroyed by the violent flow.
A report published in one news daily of Assam while presenting research data of a USA university has claimed that the state is losing canopy or covering trees at a frightening pace for the last twenty years. This is due to the unprecedented velocity of deforestation and Karbi Anglong has topped the list with 97.4 Kha (kilo hectares) loss of forest cover. The second place has been firmly secured by Dima Hasao autonomous district, with 63.2 Kha loss followed by Sonitpur 17.4 Kha, Tinsukia 13.2 Kha, and Kokrajhar with 10.4 Kha.
