KARIMGANJ : In the wake of the rape and murder incident in Kolkata, the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) has sparked widespread demonstrations across the country. On a rainy day, more than a hundred students took to the streets, holding candles and demanding immediate and severe action against the perpetrators.

The protests, marked by slogans and chants, reflect the deep frustration of students and citizens alike. Demonstrators are calling for the arrest and harsh punishment of those responsible.

Meanwhile, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has called for a nationwide strike, withdrawing non-emergency medical services for 24 hours starting today. The strike, which began at 6 a.m. on August 17, aims to address the uproar over the tragic incident.

The closure will affect outpatient departments (OPDs) and elective surgeries, though emergency services and casualty departments will remain operational.

The 31-year-old trainee doctor was raped and murdered on August 9 inside the medical college where she worked, sparking nationwide protests among doctors. The IMA’s strike reflects the severity of the tragedy and calls for systemic changes within the healthcare sector.

The IMA has outlined five key demands: – Addressing grueling 36-hour shifts and improving rest areas for resident doctors.

– Integrating recent amendments to the Epidemic Diseases Act to enhance security measures.

– Demanding a thorough investigation into the murder and prosecution of those responsible for recent vandalism at RG Kar Hospital.

– Implementing stringent security measures, including CCTV cameras and security personnel, similar to airport protocols.

– Ensuring a fair compensation for the victim’s family.

Protests have surged nationwide, with doctors in New Delhi, Mumbai, and Hyderabad joining the demonstrations. In Kolkata, junior doctors Rumalika Kumar and Riya Bera have voiced their frustration, criticizing the lack of transparency in the investigation and calling for the immediate arrest of all suspects.

The Kolkata Police have reported the arrest of 25 individuals linked to the hospital vandalism.
