Due to a visible lack of coordination between district administration and police, Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council authority could not unfetter any significant land area from the clutches of illegal settlers
The Land Revenue department of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council carried out an eviction drive in the infamous Khan Basti locality located within the general area of Balijan, of Bokajan Sub-Division, Karbi Anglong autonomous district.
However, due to a visible lack of coordination between district administration and police, Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council authority could not unfetter any significant land area from the clutches of illegal settlers. The drive remained ineffective in contrast to the eviction of the nearby Dudu colony where the authority could liberate a large segment of land from the clutches of the illegal occupiers on December 24, 2021.
In the day-long operation, more than twenty earth removers and large derricks were engaged to demolish a targeted hundred permanent RCC constructions and fabricated houses in that built up area. Hundreds of manual laborers and government employees, nearly five hundred armed police personnel including central reserve police force individuals failed to dislodge the illegal constructions in the face of violent protest of the encroachers.
In the repeated attack of the stone pelting mob officer in charge of Khatkati police station, Raju Duwara received a serious head injury and had to be admitted to Bokajan Civil Hospital, beside the on duty police officer few photographers of local portals also received a minor injury. In spite of severe provocation of the encroachers, police did not retaliate adequately forcing the mechanized demolition squad to withdraw from exertion several times.
In today’s eviction, the department could demolish around seventy small illegal residents flanked by large unlawful constructions which are secluded by two successive interim orders of Guwahati High Court which are in force. The case has been listed on February 2, 2022, for further hearing.
Tension gripped the whole area during the eviction drive as authorities pulled down some structures a group of women tried to create a boisterous situation blocking the entry of the officials and machines of demolition, the security forces later removed them using minimum force.
Higher-ranking officials of the Land and Revenue Department, Deputy Commissioner of Karbi Anglong Dibakar Nath, and Superintendent of Police Pusparaj Singh camped at a distant place away from the troubled zone; the eviction process which started around 8.00 am and went on till sunset without much headway.
