The wrestling games of the Khelo India University Games got underway at Indira Gandhi Stadium, Kohima on 23rd February 2024 where Chief Minister, Neiphiu Rio graced the commencement programme as the special guest.
Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister, Neiphiu Rio stated that Khelo India University Games are conducted to create aspirational values and with the highest standard. He also said that the games are to promote sporting culture, create a strong interlink system of sports and education and boost infrastructure in universities.
The Chief Minister said that Nagas have been practicing their own way of wrestling for a long time. He added they don’t wrestle as opponents but as friends. Rio also stated that despite the limited resources, Nagaland was doing its best in hosting the games. He called on the athletes to give their best and hoped that they have a memorable stay in Nagaland.
Welcome address was delivered by Advisor, Youth Resources & Sports, S. Keoshu Yimkhing while the programme was chaired by Director, Youth Resources & Sports, Kethosituo Sekhose. The national anthem was performed by the 1 Naga Girls Battalion NCC Band. The programme was attended by a host of dignitaries including Ministers, Advisors and senior government officials.
The games began with the verification which was followed by the qualifications & repechages. The finals for various weight categories were also held during the day.
