NEWS 1- The central government is appointing bureaucrats of their choice in selecting the Chief Election Commissioner. The Supreme Court will question this system. In view of a petition in this regard on Tuesday, a five-member divisional bench comprising Justice KM Joseph said that the change in the system is necessary to keep the election process fair.

Every government wants to appoint the person of its choice in the chair of Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioner. This cannot be allowed to continue. Justice Yashef said that the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court should be kept as a member of the committee which will be formed to carry out the selection process of the Chief Election Commissioner. This will at least make the selection process fair. Thus, the highest court of the country has raised many questions about the Centre’s position on the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner.

NEWS 2- A delegation of the Meghalaya government is going to Delhi to lodge a complaint with the Union Home Minister about the firing incident. The delegation is led by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma. They will meet Union Home Minister Amit Shah and say that the Assam government is responsible for the incident.

Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sharma has already demanded an investigation into the incident by the NIA. He said that if Assam Police is guilty then he will accept it. He commented that the incident is very unfortunate.

NEWS 3- Lachit Borphukan’s 400th birth anniversary celebrations have started in New Delhi today. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitaram inaugurated this event. Stating this, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma said that the glorious achievements of this great hero and the glorious history of 2000 years of Assam will be highlighted on Lachit’s birth anniversary. He remarked that the historians of the country have not mentioned much about Lachit’s heroism

NEWS 4- A student was slapped by the teacher for wearing a saffron muffler in the college. This incident happened at Cachar College in Silchar Assam. The student named Kunal Pal filed a case against the teacher at Silchar Malugram police station. The incident caused intense tension in Cachar College. Debaddoti Chowdhury, general secretary of the students’ union of Cachar College strongly protested this incident and said, “If other students can come to college wearing caps, then what is wrong with us wearing saffron mufflers?” They said that they will continue their agitation if no action is taken in this regard.

NEWS 5- Silchar police seized heroin worth Rs 40 lakh and arrested two smugglers. A police team led by Additional Superintendent of Police Crime Branch of Cachar district Kalyan Kumar Das managed to seize a large amount of heroin in a raid on Silchar Trunk Road on Tuesday evening.

In a press conference in Silchar on Wednesday, Superintendent of Police Numal Mahato said that based on secret information, Additional Superintendent of Police Crime Branch Kalyan Kumar Das and some policemen were able to recover heroin from thirty soap boxes by searching the car of Swift Desire and two drug smugglers were arrested along with them. He said that the police are continuing to investigate the incident.
