Giving a presentation on the survey report, Dr. Lenin while addressing a workshop on the formulation of the “Manipur State Drug Policy” on Sunday at the City Convention Centre pointed out that the menace of drug abuse among the younger generation is rising all over the world and India is no exception.

‘Accurate knowledge on the extent and pattern of substances use in the country is a significant first step in working together to address and ultimately resolve the health problem,’ asserted Dr. Lenin who recommended scientific evidence based treatment needs to be made available for people with substance use disorders. He also said that enhancing outpatient clinics with trained human resources, infrastructure, medicines and supplies, a system of monitoring and mentoring is urgently required.

Research has demonstrated that best prevention strategies are those which are based on scientific evidence and which involve working with families, schools and communities in general. Evidence based substance use prevention programs are needed to protect the young people as awareness alone is not sufficient forbehavioral change. Strengthening drug de addiction programme and involvement and partnership of all stake holders including civil society partners and family members are also essential.
