Manipur: Black Day observed to protest merging with Indian Union

Imphal : The black flag was hoisted as a part of the Black Day being observed in Manipur on Sunday. The observation is being held till September 30 by the Youth Progresssive Club, (YPC), Ishok, Bishnupur district, under the Nambol assembly constituency in Manipur.

On Sunday, the Day was observed at Ishok, Nambol, about 12 km from Imphal. Speaking on the occasion, Huidrom Dhanapat, Secretary General of the Phougou Chengei Lup, Meira Paibi said that India formally announced the merger of the state of Manipur with India on October 15, 1949, after the then King of Manipur Maharaj Bodhchandra was forced to sign the pre-drafted Merger Agreement on September 21 of the same year in Shillong, Meghalaya.

The Maharaja was coerced to sign a Merger Agreement with the Union of India, to take effect on 15 October the same year. As a part of the celebration, many individuals who attended the observation paid floral tributes to the photos of those who lost their lives in the ongoing ethnic violence for the territorial integrity of Manipur.In the ongoing violence that broke out on May 3 between the Kukis and Meiteis, over 160 people lost their lives and over 60,000 people are being displaced.
