The interim governor of Manipur PB Acharya on Monday suspended the Imphal Municipal Corporation for a period of six months with immediate effect considering the financial lapses committed by the corporation.

A notification from MAHUD department Manipur stated that the Governor, in exercise of the powers conferred by Section 205 of the Manipur Municipal Act, 1994 read with the provision of the 3rd Amendment Act 2005 and 10th Amendment Act, 2016 suspends the Imphal Municipal Corporation for a period of six months with immediate effect.

The notification mentioned that the government had examined the report of the Local Fund Audit dated January 14, 2019 regarding the Special Audit Inspection conducted on the corporation.

It stated that the government issued a showcause notice to the corporation vide notice number 13/5/2109 dated July 3 2019 with a direction to give an explanation  and clarification regarding various financial irregularities, violation of guidelines, diversion of funds, irregularities in installations of solar lamps etc.

On July 9 the corporation submitted para wise explanation to the showcause notice but the written explanation furnished by the corporation have not satisfactorily and appropriately explained the charges. 

Considering the lapses committed by the corporation, the state government is of the opinion that the corporation is not competent to perform its duties and has exceeded and abused its power stated the notification.
