Imphal: Heavy rainfall in Manipur’s Noney district has triggered landslides, blocking a significant portion of the Imphal-Silchar highway and affecting vehicle movement.

A major landslide, measuring around 150 meters, occurred at Awangkhul village under the Nungba Police Station, blocking National Highway-37. The landslide, which took place on Friday at 3 pm, has stranded around 400 goods-laden trucks on either side of the highway.

However, machinery from the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd. (NHIDCL) has been deployed to clear the debris, with the road expected to be cleared by Sunday.

The incessant rains have severely disrupted normal life in the Noney district, with landslides damaging over 8 houses in Longman part-1. Local villagers have sought government assistance to study the land sinking in the habitat area to prevent further calamities.

Mudslides from the hilly terrain have destroyed dwelling structures in several villages, including Rengpang Part 3 (Kiangbiangpang) Nungba, Rongdai, Shantikhunou, Siblong, Nungkao, and Taodaijang.

The heavy rains have also caused power outages, telecommunication disruptions, and the collapse of mobile tower walls. Affected families have been relocated to safer areas.
