Bamboo can be an alternative to poppy to conserve the environment and revenue generation: Scientist
Imphal : Manipur on Monday observed World Bamboo Day under the theme ‘Bamboo, Our Natural Heritage for Sustainable Future’ was observed at Imphal.
It was jointly organized by the Indian National Trust on Arts and Cultural Heritage (INTACH), Manipur Branch, and the North East Institute of Science and Technology, (NEIST) Jorhat, Assam, a constituent establishment of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), New Delhi.
Dr RK Chingkhei, a scientist, while speaking on the occasion said that the environmental degradation made by poppy plantations could be maintained by bamboo culturing. The bamboo plantation can be an alternative to poppy to conserve the environment and revenue generation in the state, she said.
However, the production of bamboo has decreased to a certain extent during the past few years. Asia is the largest bamboo-producing continent in the world consisting of about 80 %. and Northeast India is one of the major areas for bamboo production in the world.
