Manipuri women’s outfits press PM and CM to hand over the case of Meitei woman gang rape to the CBI

Imphal : Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh on Thursday have been urged to take proper investigations into the gangrape case of a Meitei woman by the Kuki miscreants on May 3, 2023,  the first day of the communal violence between the Kukis and Meiteis.

Two powerful women’s organizations in the state –  All Manipur Women’s Voluntary Association, (AMWVA) and Poirei Leimarol Apunba Meira Paibi (PLAMP) pressed the central and state leaders to hand over the case of the alleged gangrape of a Meitei woman to the CBI for finding details thereof.

These outfits have also strongly condemned the acts of Kuki miscreants against the weaker section of society as barbaric and inhuman. President of the AMWVA, Y Kunjarani Deviwhile talking to newsmen at her office, in Imphal on Thursday has also demanded the case to be handed over to the CBI at the earliest.

L Memchoubi Devi, President of the PLAMP said that stringent punishments would be imparted to those Kuki miscreants involved in the gang rape of a Meitei woman in Churachandpur on May 3, the first day of the communal violence eruption between the Kukis and Meities.

The two outfits have called for a mass sit-in protest against the alleged gangrape on August 11 (Friday) in the state.
Notably, on Wednesday, the Bishnupur Women Police Station registered a  “Zero FIR” under Section 154 Criminal Procedure in connection with the alleged rape of a 37-year-old Meitei woman in Churachandpur on May 3. A zero FIR can be filed in any police station, regardless of whether the offense was committed under the jurisdiction of that particular police station, the police said.

The woman has claimed that she was gang-raped by a group of five to six Kuki miscreants. The incident occurred around 6:30 pm while she and others were attempting to escape from their homes in Churachandpur.

Police said that a case has been registered on charges of gang rape, assault or criminal force to a woman with the intent to outrage her modesty, and criminal conspiracy with common intention, which are punishable under sections 376-D, 354, 120-B, and 34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Following the registration of the Zero FIR, the victim underwent a medical examination.

The primary jurisdiction of the case falls under the jurisdiction of the Women’s Police Station in Churachandpur. But the Bishnupur Women Police Station has forwarded the FIR to the Churachandpur Police Station for further investigations the police added.
