Imphal : Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh on Saturday led hundreds of people in paying floral tributes to the statue of Jana Neta Hijam Irawat, a multi-faceted, the first modern architect of Manipur and versatile humanistic revolutionary who stood against foreign and autocratic rule during the country’s freedom movement.
On his 125th birth anniversary, the state function was held at Irawat Square, near the Manipur Legislative Assembly, Imphal. For his pioneering role in all the fields during his time, he was called the first modern architect of Manipur, the Chief Minister said in a message.
He was a freedom fighter, politician, and social activist par excellence, a versatile personality, a gifted poet, and an accomplished scholar. His contribution to the field of literature and sports and the social upliftment of the downtrodden continue to impact our lives to this day.
“Hijam Irabot introduced the idea of emotional integration between the hills and the plains. His efforts towards maintaining oneness and emotional integrity among people of different communities are still fondly remembered, and people lovingly call him Lamyanba Irabot.
His contributions to society and greatness as a true leader are being recognized increasingly after his death. Born and brought up in Imphal, Irawat died in 1951 in Tangbo, now Myanmar as a revolutionary.
