Some are intentionally trying to spread violence even in areas that have remained peaceful for nearly a year
IMPHAL : Suspected militants burnt houses, police outposts and forest beats in Manipur’s Jiribam district on the midnight of June 7. In response to the escalating situation, additional state forces were swiftly airlifted from Imphal to Jiribam on Saturday morning, police said.
According to sources, armed militants targeted key establishments, including the Jirimuk Police Outpost, Jiri Mukh Forest Beat, and Chotobekra Police Check Post. Additionally, several houses in the areas of Lamtaikhunou, Loukoipung, Narayanpur, and Bungtangkhal fell victim to the arson.
The incident occurred during the late hours and extended into the early morning, affecting the residents in the area. One displaced individual strongly condemned the outbreak of violence in what was once considered a peaceful district. Forced to flee their homes in search of safety, residents emphasised the urgent need to strengthen security forces in vulnerable areas.
In response to the escalating situation, additional state forces were swiftly airlifted from Imphal to Jiribam on Saturday morning, police said. Newly elected Member of Parliament Angomcha Bimol Akoijam has strongly condemned the recent outbreak of violence in Jiribam district and alleged a conspiracy to destabilise the state.
Addressing the media at his residence, Akoijam expressed concern over the emergence of tensions in the once-peaceful district immediately after the elections, calling it “intriguing.”
“There are certain people who wish to disintegrate Manipur,” he claimed. “It is easier to destroy the state if the crisis is prolonged. Some are intentionally trying to spread violence even in areas that have remained peaceful for nearly a year.”
The MP cautioned the people of Manipur against using provocative language on social media that could incite further violence. He urged them to be responsible and abstain from aggravating the crisis.
Alleging attempts to create a partition in Manipur, Akoijam cited the example of the Meitei-inhabited Khumujama Leikai area in Churachandpur district, which was reportedly flattened after residents were forced to relocate.
“Their activities are in line with the partition of India and Pakistan,” he claimed. Akoijam informed that he has requested the district authorities to enhance security arrangements to ensure the safety and security of the people in the affected areas.
