Education (S) department of Manipur have decided to enforce “No School Bag day” on all working Saturdays for class 1 to 8 students including the government, government aided, and private schools.

This decision was taken after considering the long term physical and mental effects of carrying heavy school bags everyday by the young students which causes lots of inconveniences, health problems and discomfort to the students and to make schools more conducive and joyful place for learning.

A release from the education department stated that the students in these categories of classes are found to be always engaged with the routine works related to school curriculum, additional homework, assignments thereby finding hard to find any quality time for life skill activities including games and sports, extra co-curricular activities which can help in the students holistic personality development.

It also mentioned that, on all working Saturdays, the schools shall ensure taking life skill activities including extra co-curricular activities, games and sports, recreational activities and make the school more joyful place for learning.

Merina who is a single mother appreciates the decision and said that it should be implement as soon as possible. She also said that the number of No school bag days should be enforce twice a week because only theoretical education is not sufficient.

During our times, we were taught moral education but the present day students are not taught anymore.Teaching practical lessons in the field during no school bag day will make the students aware about importance of living things and value of products, she added.
