Plastic related problem is faced all over India.

People of Meghalaya especially the residents of Nongkynjeng village should remain grateful to Padma Shri Rajagopalan Vasudevan from Tamil Nadu for his technology which has made their road more durable and offered a solution to the growing problem of plastic waste. 

Vasudevan has developed a technology, by mixing shredded plastic waste with heated bitumen which makes the road more durable. Though this technology gathered much popularity in Japan and China Vasudevan chose to share this technology with the Indian Government free of cost.

The villagers of Nongkynjeng village has constructed a 1 km road using this technology and making it the first such construction in the Northeast, 470 kg plastic waste like polythene carry bags, plastic cups, chips packets, and foam packaging have been collected from the district headquarters of Nongstoin and Shillong.

This technology has proved to be cost-effective as a 1 km road has been built spending only 33 lakh. East Khasi Hills deputy commissioner Arunkumar Kembhavi urges that if all roads could be built using this technology, the plastic menace could be solved.

The road was constructed under the Meghalaya Livelihoods and Access to Markets Projects (Megha-Lamp) and MGNREGS.

The Megha-Lamp project was launched in September 2015 to provide access to markets and value chains to enhance the livelihood of farmers.

The World Economic Forum report states that these plastic roads are more durable against changing the weather.

As these roads have less water carrying capacity than normal roads, the chances of crack, potholes or craters are much lesser. They are maintenance-free, greener and three times durable than conventional roads.
