Odisha Gets Severe ‘Fani’ Warnings

Extremely severe cyclonic storm “FANI” to strike Odisha coast during 3rd May afternoon. Cyclone alert had been issued for Odisha.

With the wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph is very likely to commence along & off Odisha Coasts from 2nd May and very likely to become gale wind speed reaching 60-70 kmph gusting to 85 kmph from 3rd May by morning and become 170-180 kmph gusting to 200 kmph over Odisha Coast.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall at many isolated places and over south coastal Odisha is very likely to hit on 2nd May. It is expected to increase with rainfall at most places and heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places in the interior Odisha on 3rd May. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is predicted for many isolated places over north Odisha on 4th May.

Sea conditions are very likely to be extremely rough to high along & off Odissa.

Warning of storm surge of about 1.5-meter height above astronomical tide is very likely to inundate low lying areas of Ganjam, Khurda, Puri & Jagatsinghpur districts of Odisha at the time of landfall.

 Warning have been issued to the fishermen advising not to venture into deep sea areas of southwest and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal during next 12 hours. Southwest and adjoining west central Bay of Bengal, along & off Puducherry, north Tamilnadu & south Andhra Pradesh coasts till 1st May. West-central Bay of Bengal, along & off north Andhra Pradesh Coast during 1-3 May and northwest and adjoining west central Bay of Bengal along & off Odisha and West Bengal coasts from 2-4 May. Those, who are out in deep sea above areas had been advised to return to the coasts.

Damage expected and action suggested for Ganjam, Gajapati, Khurda, Puri, Jagatsinghpur districts of Odisha. Expected extensive damages to all types of houses and structures.  Potential threats are from flying objects. Uprooting of communication and power poles is also expected along with disruption of rail and road links at several places. Crop damage is also expected. Large boats and ships may get effected too.

As a predatory measure total suspension of fishing activities and evacuating of coastal areas had been initiated. Diversions or suspension of rail and road traffic had been made. People in affected areas are advised to remain indoors. Movement in motor boats and small ships have been restricted.

Naval ships and aircraft are at standby for rescue and relief as ‘FANI’ is expected to cross Odissa coast with about 680 km South-South West of Puri (Odisha).  Eastern Naval Command (ENC) is closely monitoring the movement of the cyclonic storm.  It is likely to move North West wards during next 12 hours and thereafter recurve North-North East direction and expected to cross Odisha Coast between Gopalpur and Chandbali, South of Puri around 03 May afternoon with maximum sustained wind speeds of 175-185 kmph gusting to 205 kmph.
