PARLIAMENT HIGHLIGHTS:
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the first among MPs to take oath in Lok Sabha
- Highlighting the importance of the Opposition, the prime minister said, “The role of an active Opposition is important. The opposition need not bother about their numbers. I hope they will speak actively and participate in house proceedings.”
- At 10:32 am PM Modi arrived in Parliament, welcomes “new friends”. He said “We are working to fulfil people’s aspirations. New friends will join today, and they will bring new energy. We value the Opposition and their role. The Opposition should play an active role in Parliament.”
- The first two days of Parliament session will be used for administering the oath of office to all Lok Sabha MPs by Speaker Virender Kumar.
- The Modi government had promulgated some ordinances, including the triple talaq bill, amendment bills on Jammu and Kashmir reservation, Aadhaar laws, companies act, and the Indian Medical Council Act.
After the Lok Sabha elections, before the monsoon session of Parliament PM Modi said that the new session is commencing today. With this session, new hopes and dreams are connected. Since independence, this Lok Sabha election has seen the highest female voters and women MPs. He said, “After several decades, a government has won an absolute majority for the second term. People have given us the chance to serve the country again. I request all the parties to support the decisions that are in favour of people.”
The PM said, “After the formation of the new Lok Sabha, the first house is being started today. There is an opportunity to introduce new colleagues. New dreams also add up. What are the characteristics and strengths of Indian democracy, we experience it in every election.
After the independence, the majority of voting, voting of most women, voting of female voters, is a selection filled with many specialities. After several decades, with a full majority of the government, the public has given a boost to serve again”.
Besides triple talaq, the bills likely to be introduced in the House are Central Educational Institutions (Reservation in Teachers Cadre) Bill, 2019 and Aadhaar and Other Laws (Amendment) Bill 2019. The Modi government had promulgated 10 ordinances in its first term after the opposition used its majority in the Rajya Sabha to block the bills in the previous session
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also invited MPs from both houses of Parliament for a dinner on June 20 where they will interact freely and exchange views. The first session of Lok Sabha has been convened from June 17 to July 26. The Economic Survey will be presented on July 4 and the budget on July 5. The Lok Sabha speaker will be elected on June 19. While the Lok Sabha will have 30 sittings, the Rajya Sabha will have 27 sittings between the 40-day period of the first session.
