Guwahati : The Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MSPCB) has instructed all factories and ferroalloy units to install online emissions monitoring systems. This move will allow the MSPCB to continuously track emissions and identify any facilities exceeding permissible limits.

DGH Chyrmang, member secretary of the MSPCB, addressed representatives from Khasi Jaintia region factories during a workshop on “Online Continuous Emission Effluent Monitoring System for Air Polluting Industries.” He emphasized the importance of this initiative, particularly in “non-attainment” areas like Byrnihat, which struggles with air quality exceeding safe levels set by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).

Dr. Chyrmang highlighted the significant contribution of all factory types to air pollution. However, he acknowledged that ferroalloy units and coke factories often lack the proper guidance compared to cement factories.

“Cement factories have a longer operational history within the state,” he explained.
