Heavy rainfall in Dima Hasao district of Assam led to landslides and created a flood-like situation, disrupting railway services and road access in various areas.
Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has directed officials to ensure swift restoration of connectivity and provide necessary assistance to those affected by the relentless rains.
The Assam chief minister’s office (CMO) stated, “CM Himanta Biswa Sarma is closely monitoring the flooding and landslides caused by heavy rainfall in Dima Hasao and Barak Valley. The CM has instructed authorities to expedite the restoration of connectivity and offer all possible assistance to the affected individuals.”
Landslides have affected railway services between Jatinga-Lumpur and New Harangajao in Assam.
Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) chief public relations officer (CPRO) Sabyasachi De reported that railway tracks have been inundated with mud and water at several locations, although no damages have been reported yet.
Efforts are underway to clear the tracks.
Meanwhile, waterlogging has been reported in several areas of Dima Hasao district of Assam, particularly in Haflong, due to continuous rainfall.
Authorities have announced the closure of schools in Haflong and advised citizens to avoid unnecessary travel.
Officials stated that incessant rain since Wednesday (May 01) night, coupled with flooding and landslides, has disrupted daily life in various parts of Dima Hasao district in Assam.
The Dima Hasao District Disaster Management Authority has issued an advisory urging individuals to postpone non-essential travel until May 4.
Furthermore, a section of the Haflong-Silchar Road between Harangajao and Miyungkro has been washed away, leaving numerous vehicles stranded and severely hampering communication channels.
