Manipur, a northeastern state of India has witnessed various conflicts over the years, more recently, the communal conflict between Meitei and Kuki. The tension between the two communities has resulted in various sporadic incidents of violence in the state. Over 100 people have been reported to have died and several hundred were injured during this recent conflict between Meitei and Kuki. The rising tension and violent incidents have led the state government to shut down internet connection in the state since May 3 till date.

To offer friendship, show commitment to ending the escalating violence, and express empathy and solidarity with the people of Manipur, a joint prayer between Interfaith Forum for Peace and Harmony (IFPH) Manipur and Nagaland Joint Christian Forum was conducted in Manipur Press Club on Thursday.

The Nagaland Joint Christian Forum was led by Rev. Dr. Wati Aier of Forum for Naga Reconciliation (FNR); Rev. Dr. N. Papino, Vice President of Nagaland Joint Christian Forum; Rev. Dr. Vevo Phesao, Vice President of Fellowship of Naga Baptist Churches Kohima and other members of the Nagaland Joint Christian Forum.

Rev. Dr. Wati Aier spoke about bringing peace and harmony to Manipur. They said, “As neighbours, we ask that the people of Manipur give peace a chance and courageously end this continuing cycle of violence. We encourage you to walk together for the present and future generations by talking with one another and beginning a dialogue process that connects generations and cultures to heal society.” Rev. Dr. Wati Aier emphasised that the peace talks shouldn’t be delayed as there will be more human suffering if the violence continues to go on.

While speaking to the media Dr. Wati said that they have come here with the motive of peace as they believe that reconciling work. Dr. Wati echoed that they can offer a neutral place either in Kohima or Dimapur where both the community leaders of Manipur can spend a week discussing and starting a dialogue in a serene and peaceful environment.

Answering a question from the senior journalist of Manipur Pradip Phanjaobam whether they are ready to become the interlocutor for Manipur between the two communities, Dr. Wati stated that this would be their honour and though they are no experts they do have their own experience of the past fifteen years where they started the reconciliation process in Nagaland to bring peace in Naga society.
