Silchar : On the occasion of Pohela Baisakh, the Bengali new year, a memorial service was held at Silchar Press Club to observe the 95th birth anniversary of the late politician barrister Abul Fazal Golam Osmani, a former member of Lok Sabha who represented the Barpeta constituency of Assam from 1998 to 2009.
A discussion on the Role of literature and Cultural Discourse in the arena of Politics was also held on the occasion. The entire programme was organised by Barak Nagarik Sansad, Speaking on the occasion, renowned poet and veteran journalist Atin Das said that Golam Osmani was a trailblazer and a torchbearer of wisdom in politics.
Atin Das further opined that more research should be undertaken on the life and times of the departed politician who was an intellectual par excellence. All the speakers underlined the manner in which Osmani would give importance to the Indian Constitution both in his social and political dealings. He was also a writer on socio-political issues plaguing the state of Assam particularly the people of Barak Valley.
Singers Seema Purkayastha and Ananya Roybarman performed classical Bengali songs on the occasion. Others who spoke on the occasion included member of CRPC Sadhan Purkayastha, Madhuri Biswas, schoolmate of language martyr Kamala Bhattacharjee , family members Kaberi Osmani, Wajed Raza Osmani and Ali Raza Osmani, Tajuddin Barbhuiya, politician Sharif Uj Zaman Laskar, college teachers Subrata Deb and Apratim Nag, Simanta Bhattacharjee, Shankar Dey who is the chief secretary of Barak Nagarik Sansad, Rasharaj Das, Arati Das, Sanjib Roy, Maznul Haque Mazumder, Bijoy Kumar Bhattacharjee, Milannuddin Laskarand journalist Shibaji Dhar amongst others .
