Silchar: Silchar on Friday observed Bhasha Sahid Divas by paying homage to all the language martyrs who made the supreme sacrifice of their lives on May 19, 1961 for the cause of Bengali language.

About 11 Bengalis were martyred in that year. Silchar MLA Dipayan Chakraborty offered his floral tributes to the language martyrs at Tarapur railway station and thereafter he proceeded towards Silchar Sashan Ghat.

“One’s mother tongue is extremely close to an individual. It is one’s identity. On May 19, 1961 those 11 brave hearts who sacrificed their lives for the cause of Bengali language are certainly a matter of pride for us,” Chakraborty said.
