Imphal : A total of 200 bags of Areca nuts, valued at Rs 24 lakhs in the regional markets to be smuggled out from Imphal, Manipur to Dimapur, the commercial hub of Nagaland has been confiscated. An alleged smuggler from Dimapur was also apprehended, a defense wing press statement said here on Wednesday.

Assam Rifles successfully intercepted a cross-border smuggling operation involving contraband goods in the Ukhrul District of Manipur during the past 24 hours.

During routine vehicle inspections at PVCP Lambui, the checkpoint personnel observed suspicious activity involving a lone truck and an individual at 17:00 hrs. Upon conducting a thorough search, it was discovered that Areca Nuts (Supari) were being unlawfully smuggled from Imphal to Dimapur, intended for black market distribution.

A total of 200 bags of Areca Nuts, valued at Rs 24 Lakhs, were seized and subsequently handed over to the Forest Beat Office. The individual in custody, Nurul Haque of Dimapur, has been transferred to the Custody of Police outpost Finch Corner, Ukhrul district for further investigation.
