To discuss various issues and notable points of different indigenous tribes of this Dima Hasao, Speaker of Assam Legislative Assembly, Biswajit Daimary and Deputy Speaker Dr Numal Momin held an interaction with indigenous people of Dima in presence of Chief Executive Member of NCHAC, Debolal Gorlosa at District Library Auditorium on Saturday.
Accompanying them on the two days visit MLA of Jonai Constituency Bhuban Pegu, MLA of Boroma Constituency Bhupen Boro, and MLA of Haflong constituency Nandita Gorlosa.
Others present on stage were Chairperson of NCHAC Ranu Langthasa, Deputy Commissioner Dima Hasao Paul Barua, Principal Secretary Mukut Kemprai, in-charge Principal Secretary of NCHAC Thai Tso Daulagupu, Superintendent of Police Jayant Singh etc.
In his speech, Speaker Biswajit Daimary said that most of the age-old traditions and practices in some way or the other had a scientific approach due to which most of the healing traditions, Ayurveda, ways of life, practices are still so versatile and successful. However due to negligence most of the beautiful traditional and culturally rich indigenous practices are seen as endangered. Adding further to his speech he said with an objective to protect the age-old faith, tradition, and heritage, the government has created a new department named as Indigenous Faith and Cultural department. It is with this aim that a separate budget of Rs. 1 crore is earmarked in the last budget session under the guidance of Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswas Sarma.
Dr. Numal Momin also said in his speech that the indigenous practices and lifestyle of the tribal people is itself the identity which has to be honoured and preserved as there are many things unexplained which even the modern ways have not been able to achieve.
Welcoming the initiative of the government for the development of the traditional and indigenous faith and culture, NCHAC CEM Debolal Gorlosa said that the district of Dima Hasao has many tribes who have their own distinct culture, traditions, folk song, and folk dance. In a bid to encourage the youth to develop an interest in traditional musical instruments and dances CEM Gorlosa has offered jobs to those who won in traditional competitions such as playing musical instruments like ‘Kharam and Muri’ and winners of traditional dance competitions during Bushu. He added that he has been giving all efforts to preserve the traditions and the customary rituals and proposed for restricted holidays on the annual harvest of all tribes of Dima Hasaom during the harvesting festival in the calendar of the Assam government.
In the evening, all the dignitaries led by Speaker Daimary offered floral tribute to the statue of Veer Sambudhan Phonglo, a Freedom fighter.
Speaking to the media Speaker said they were here for discussion relating newly created Department of Indigenous Faith and Culture with an objective to preserve and protect the faiths and cultures of the indigenous communities.
