West Bengal doctors are on strike for a week after two of
their colleagues were attacked and seriously injured by relatives of a patient
at the NRS Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.
Indian Medical Association (IMA) has called for a nationwide
strike today to express solidarity with the agitating doctors. According to
IMA, 3.5 lakh doctors are expected to participate in the strike which is likely
to affect non-essential health services across the country today.
It said, all non-essential services including OPDs have been
withdrawn for 24 hours from 6 AM today, while emergency and causality services
will continue to function. IMA, the apex body of doctors in the country, has
also renewed its demand for a central law to check violence against health care
workers in hospitals.
