Arunachal Pradesh government will be benifited by 12% free power from this project. It would contributing in moderating the flood that occurs in the downstream areas . It has been learnt that Dibang River has been identified as a river which contributes to the flood in Assam. So with the implementation of this project can be a help in sizing down the area of Assam and could be protected from floods and the perennial damage that occurs due to floods.
The key objective of the Dibang Multipurpose project, in Arunachal Pradesh has flooded moderation. The dam is located on the Dibang river in Lower Dibang Valley District of Arunachal Pradesh.
The union cabinet has approved the sum of Rupees1 600 crore for this storage based hydroelectric project.
The decision has been taken at a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The amount has been approved for pre-investment activities and various clearances for the project. Based on June 2018 prices, the estimated cost of the project was amounted to be 28080.35 and the completion period would be nine years from the date of receipt of government sanction.
This would be the largest ever hydroelectric project in India which shall generate 2880 MW (12×240 MW) power to produce 11223 MU of energy in a 90 per cent dependable year. The dam of 278 metres height will be the highest dam in India once completed.
This project would require the construction of a 278-metre high concrete gravity dam which is to be above deepest foundation level, six horseshoe-shaped headrace tunnels of length varying from 300 metres to 600 metres, an underground powerhouse and six horseshoe-shaped tailrace tunnels of length varying from 320 metres to 470 metre.
The benefit that the Arunachal Pradesh government will derive from this project is 12% free power. The construction of the project would moderate flood in the downstream areas. It has been learnt that Dibang River has been identified as one river which contributes to the flood in Assam, So with the implementation of the project a sizeable area of Assam would be protected from floods and the perennial damage due to floods would be mitigated.
The project is having all statutory clearances such as TEC, environment clearance, forest clearance (stage-l) and defence clearance. It is yet to get forest clearance (stage-II). However, it is seeking investment sanction from the central government. The project has been stuck due to clearances and protests by locals over displacement and loss of forest.
