Imphal : Today marks the commencement of a 15-day Summer Theatre Workshop, 2024, at the Relief Camp located at Manipur Trade and Expo Centre, Lamboi Khongnangkhong, under Imphal West district. Organized by the National School of Drama (Tie Wing) Tripura in collaboration with Khenjonglang and the Department of Social Welfare, this initiative seeks to uplift the mental health of displaced children affected by ongoing crises.
Addressing the media, Ngangom Uttam Singh, Director of Social Welfare, highlighted the profound impact of recent conflicts, which initially affected approximately 22,000 children. He noted a positive trend with the number now reduced to 14,000 as families return to their homes. Singh emphasized the crucial role of initiatives like group counseling, facilitated in partnership with Child Care Institutions and supported by training from institutions like NIMHANS, RIMS, and JNIMS.
“The ongoing group counseling sessions aim to provide comprehensive mental health care to affected children,” Singh stated. He underscored the importance of the Summer Theatre Workshop in furthering these efforts, describing it as a therapeutic tool to enhance the well-being of children and their parents across various relief camps.
Dr. Thaninleima, Director of Khengjonglang, elaborated on the workshop’s objectives, emphasizing its play-way approach to healing through theatre techniques. Designed for children aged 8 to 16 years, the workshop will take place at two locations: Manipur Trade and Expo Centre, Lamboi Khongnangkhong, and Temporary Shelter Home, Sajiwa, in Imphal East district. Dr. Thaninleima expressed confidence that the workshop will contribute significantly to the holistic development of the children involved.
The 15-day program aims not only to nurture creative talents but also to provide a supportive environment where children can express themselves and overcome emotional challenges caused by displacement. This initiative reflects a collaborative effort to prioritize the mental health and well-being of young individuals affected by adversity.
