Supreme Court Extends the Time Limit for Assam National Register of Citizens to August 31

After the NRC coordinator sought several times to ensure that draft lists and the list of new names are published, the Supreme Court has extended the time for publication of Assam National Register of Citizens till August 31. Previously the deadline was 31 July.

On 23rd July Tuesday, besides this announcement the top court of this country rejected the joint plea of Centre and Assam for re-verification of 20% of draft NRC data to eliminate large scale inclusion of illegal migrants.

Earlier on 19 July Centre and the Assam Government moved to the Apex Court for extension of the July 31 deadline for finalisation of the NRC. Moving to the top court the Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told a bench of CJI Ranjan Gogoi and Justice RF Nariman that, India cannot be the refugee capital of the world. Illegal migrants have no place in this country. Beside this Tushar Mehta had said in the court seeking more time for the process.

After the order was passed by a bench comprising Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice RF Nariman which pursued the reports filed by the Assam NRC Coordinator Prateek Hajela.

Apart from extension of deadline the Supreme Court also directed the NRC coordinator to publish a public notice asking all stakeholders to appear before the top court on August 7 at 3 pm to raise their issues regarding the NRC. All petitioners, who had approached the court with their issues will now be heard on August 7.

Meanwhile, NRC coordinator told the Supreme Court that there was no need for further re-verification as over 72 lakh people had been re-verified already to consider exclusion, inclusion of names in the list. After this Supreme Court has taken the decision to reject pleas of the Centre and Assam in which they had sought 20 percent sample verification to find out wrongful inclusions or exclusions in the NRC.
