Security measures tightened in Manipur, 84 detained for violation
Imphal : Key figures of the Manipur government convened at Raj Bhavan, Imphal, on Thursday to address the ongoing law and order crisis in the state.
The meeting included the Governor of Manipur, Anusuiya Uikey, Director General of Manipur Police Rajiv Singh, and State Security Advisor Kuldiep Singh.
The high-level discussion follows a recent meeting in the national capital where these leaders, along with the Union Home Minister, deliberated on strategies to restore peace in the violence-stricken border state.
According to a Raj Bhavan communique, Governor Anusuiya Uikey urged the Manipur Security Advisor and Police Chief to intensify efforts to bring back normalcy and peace. During the meeting, DGP Rajiv Singh briefed the Governor on the recent incidents in the Jiribam district and the subsequent actions taken by the state police in collaboration with central forces. He outlined the security measures implemented to prevent further violence across the state.
Governor Uikey directed the DGP to ensure the safety and security of people and property, emphasizing the need for stringent security along the two national highways to facilitate the unobstructed flow of petroleum products and goods.
She instructed the DGP to take decisive action against those involved in violence and to provide necessary security in Kangpokpi, Tengnoupal, Churachandpur, and all valley districts. Additionally, she highlighted the importance of supporting displaced individuals in Jiribam district.
Security Advisor Kuldiep Singh briefed the Governor on the deployment of state and central security forces at vulnerable locations, especially in the remote areas of Jiribam district. The Governor reiterated the need for comprehensive security measures to maintain law and order and to promote the restoration of peace and normalcy.
Upon their return from Delhi, Security Advisor Kuldiep Singh and DGP Rajiv Singh met with Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh to update him on the security and administrative measures being taken to restore peace in the state.
In response to the security challenges in Manipur, security forces have intensified search operations and area domination in the hill and valley districts. This effort aims to secure vulnerable areas and maintain law and order.
As part of these operations, 127 checkpoints, commonly known as Nakas, have been set up across various districts of Manipur. These checkpoints are crucial in monitoring and regulating movement, contributing significantly to the overall security strategy.
The movement of essential items remains a priority, with 93 vehicles on NH-37 and 281 vehicles on NH-2 being ensured safe passage. This step is essential to meet the needs of the populace while maintaining strict security measures in sensitive areas.
In parallel, a robust security convoy has been deployed to safeguard vehicles passing through sensitive stretches, guaranteeing uninterrupted and secure transportation.
Amid these measures, the police have detained 84 individuals across the state for violations, underscoring the authorities’ commitment to enforcing regulations and ensuring public safety.
These proactive steps highlight the concerted efforts of security forces and law enforcement agencies in Manipur to enhance security, regulate movement, and uphold public order during these challenging times. The measures are aimed at providing a safe environment for residents and ensuring the smooth flow of essential supplies throughout the state.
Chief Minister Sangma lauded the research efforts, particularly the contributions of H. C. Chaudhary, PCCF Working Plan, Research, and Training. He emphasized the importance of research and data-driven decision-making in governance to formulate informed policies.
The report highlights that none of the sacred groves surveyed during the study have been registered with the autonomous district councils, as mandated by the 1960 rules, underscoring the urgent need for administrative action to secure these vital natural resources.
