In a joint operation of Manipur police commandos and Assam Rifles personnel two person were in Imphal Mantripukhri area in Manipur in the early morning of Sunday.
It is learned that at around 3 in the morning of Sunday, on specific information received Imphal East police commandos and troops of 6 Assam Rifles started a sudden check in the National Highway 39 which connects Imphal through Nagaland at the Koirengei area in Imphal East district.
An SUV which was approaching towards Imphal at a high speed was signalled to stop by the security personnel but the vehicle didn’t stop to which the security forces chased the SUV and could intercept it at the Mantripukhri area of Imphal.
Two occupants were held on the spot and while searching an AK 56 rifle, three magazines and 80 bullets were found in the SUV. Initial interrogation revealed that the duo were from Churachandpur district of Manipur and were bringing the weapons from Dimapur, Nagaland.
Superintendent of police (Imphal East) Jogeshchandra Haojibam informed that the police is alert, such checks will continue and this arrest is a success to ensure safety looking into ongoing Sangai Festival.
